Why MUST stone be sealed?
Since stone is naturally porous, any liquid spilled on an unsealed stone will slowly seep into the stone.

If the liquid is colored, it can chemically interact with the stone and stain it.

By sealing the stone you seal these pores preventing the spill or liquid from soaking into the stone and forcing it to remain on the surface where it can be cleaned up and removed from the stone.

What might happen if the stone is not sealed?
If the stone is not sealed and becomes stained, you have three options:
(1) Do nothing and live with the stain;
(2) Replace the damaged stone;
(3) Hire a professional to attempt to remove the stain.
Stain removal is a process called poulticing.

Poulticing has no guarantee of success and can sometimes damage the stone further. Poulticing is also an expensive, time-consuming process.

The cost of sealing is a fraction of the expense required to restore a damaged, stained area.

Will sealing prevent all stains?
Sealing will NOT prevent the marble of getting stained from acidic spills.

Stone can also become stained from absorbing liquids from below, although this is less common than top-side spills.

Is My Stone Sealed?
A simple test would be to sprinkle a few drops of water onto your stone. If after 15 to 30 minutes your stone takes on a darker wet look, it is not sealed.

A sealed surface will keep the water beaded on the surface.
